Module 5 - Copyright & Fair Use
Overview
This is a fairly simple assignment.
Access to nearly unlimited resources online poses some interesting questions about what is legal and acceptable for teachers regarding copyright issues. For example, is it OK to copy images from any source online and use them in an educational setting? What should be considered if images are used for educational purposes but are going to be presented within an educational website accessible to anybody? Do the same rules apply to the use of video files? And what about portions of texts, or articles?
It is important for educators to understand that many basic copyright laws apply differently to teachers who use material for educational purposes. Material used for educational purposes fall into the "Fair Use" category of copyright law. Hall Davidson did an excellent job of summarizing the Fair Use doctrine as it applies to teaching. In addition to your standard list of rules for your students, also list any specific issues you still have questions about and provide links to any additional resources that might be able to help you learn more about, and eventually answer, your questions.
