Module 2 - Multimedia-Enhanced Launch/Introduction
An opening line should invite the reader to begin the story. It should say: Listen. Come in here. You want to know about this.

Overview
The opening paragraphs in a book can play many important roles. They can grip the reader, introduce characters, and help set the stage for the entire story. The opening scene from movies can serve similar purposes for the narrative, as demonstrated in three of my favorite movie openings:

One powerful way to improve classroom instruction is to design and implement more comprehensive introductions to new learning experiences. And newer classroom technologies are providing additional resources to help make introductions more powerful and effective. For example, suppose you teach in a classroom that includes a computer used for presentations (among other things). This computer is connected to the Internet, and the display output is connected to a video projector. How could you use these resources to better introduce a specific experience designed to facilitate specific skills, knowledge or attitudes? What are the characteristics of any good instructional introduction?
Suppose you were about to learn some specific strategies addressing ways to help motivate students to learn something new. Now suppose you were learning from an online environment, and the teacher prepared an introductory video titled "Seven Ways to Increase Student Attention and Learning." Here is the video:

It sounds like this professor is going to provide some valuable information for educators. But what do you think is wrong with this video as an introduction to the topic "Seven Ways to Increase Student Attention and Learning"? Think.
I hope you agree with me that it certainly is not very attention-getting or motivating. Again, it seems to have some good information (though I don't really agree with much of it), but it does not really implement some of the key components of a good, effective lesson introduction.
Let's contrast this with a different education-related video. Suppose you were taking an online course that was helping to prepare you to be a professional educator, and you were introduced to some important content associated with teaching by watching the following:

Don't you think this type of an introduction is a little more attention-getting than the previous one? Since all new learning experiences have beginnings, some introduction is necessary. Research suggests that some strategies, when included in the introduction, can positively affect learner success throughout the learning experience.
For this assignment you will create a webpage included within your course website that will display embedded multimedia (images with text and videos) that you might use to help launch/introduce a new instructional experience to a group of learners. In the process, you will likely learn more about how technology might be used in your practice, as well as how to define more comprehensive learning experiences in general. Remember, this is about INTRODUCING an instructional experience...it should NOT reflect the part of the lesson where specific instructional information about the topic is presented. These videos might be useful later in a lesson, but I am interested to see how you might such media to better LAUNCH/INTRODUCE an experience...so it should motivate, help connect what the intended learners are about to learn with what they already know how to do, provide a "Big Picture" overview of what is to be learned, etc.
To help you learn more about effective introductions, and to help you learn more about how to use technology resources to improve instruction, you will communicate how the material address the following specific INTRODUCTION strategies:

To Do
Step 1:
Create a "Multimedia-Enhanced Launch" page in your website. This should be linked from your INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT menu.

On the page, you will provide information for TWO launches/introductions. For each launch, you need to
- Briefly describe the target population (grade level and/or subject area)
- Overall description of a learning experience you want your target population to complete.
- Outcomes (including applicable standards) addressed by the learning experience.
- Overview of how you plan to launch the learning experience.
- Embedded video clip(s) on your page.
- Embedded "Big Picture" graphic (can be made with Draw.io) on your page.
- Description of which INTRODUCTION strategies are addressed by the video clip(s). See the information provided in the embedded in the Strategies for an Effective Introduction notes above.
